Board Of Zoning Appeals

A Board of Zoning Appeals is defined by and set up according to state statute. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) consists of five (5) members, all of which are citizen appointments.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is defined by law as a quasi-judicial board, which means that the decisions that they make are final, and can only be overturned by a judge in a court of law.

The Board of Zoning Appeals hears a variety of petitions, including variances to the local zoning ordinances, special exceptions, use variances and temporary certificates of occupancy. This Board meets once a month, on the third Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are always open to the public.

The Board of Zoning Appeal's clerical support staff is located in the Porter County Plan Commission office. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

There are filing dates that must be met before they are presented to the Board of Zoning Appeals. Please call the Plan Commission office for more information.
